33 Things I Keep When Giving Myself Away Within The World

by The AOMuse

Meet Bassey Ikpi.  Perhaps you know her already.  I am on the late train for I was never really a faithful viewer of Def Poetry Jam.  Over the past year of a greatly expanded exploration of authorship, I have found myself discovering an increasing number of intriguing spaces in the social network.  I cannot recall where I initially spied the first bread crumb which caused me to subscribe to her Twitter feed, but the first piece of her writing which I ever read was here.

There is a hard habit I have of finding writers I adore in every spare corner of the universe and fawning over each living inclination of their pen.  I ain’t saying that this is true in this particular instance, but it is always possible.  Therefore I keep myself guarded against it.  I was so very inspired by Bassey’s magnanimous birthday entry subtitled “35 Things I need to Know and Remember”.  I knew I must eventually codify a set of my own.

I believe that I was in a conversation with a friend and while making mention of Bassey’s post, I started to rattle off the first 5 in number.  The other 26 came later on the bus ride home.  I could not figure how many I should do 31 or 32 since most of you know that I have chosen to age backwards, but I have settled on the happy medium of 33 for the sake of posterity.  I’m sure Jah’kaya won’t be wanting a 24 year old father when she turns 15.  You can laugh at me on that note.  Believe me.  I’m cracking up inside.  33 puts me two years ahead of my last birthday.  I’ll revisit you all again here at 34.  Maybe.  If the mood strikes me.

  1. Build a full life.
  2. Enjoy it.
  3. Remind yourself to revisit thing 2 often.
  4. Inform someone else how you accomplished thing 1.
  5. All other things are optional
  6. Make magic from the periphery.  Never claim credit.  If they query you about your gift, remember the credo: “a magician always reveals his/her secrets”.
  7. Play each instrument intuitively.  If someone corrects you, tell them you are both right.
  8. Always take the last dance.  At just the precise moment, give it freely to someone who is not dancing.
  9. Sarcasm is necessary when profanity would find itself intellectually less acute and impactful.  Keep at least three witty retorts in a shirt or pants pocket in case of emergency.
  10. Laughter is a panacea.  Ha ha ha ha ha ha your way to a healing.
  11. Use these first 10 steps to expand the space between you and your child for a fragment of time.  You will inevitably have a lecture for them when you return.
  12. Dance to the music.
  13. Make music to which others can dance.
  14. Muscle memory is your friend.
  15. Tiger Balm for easier mornings.
  16. Practice perfect.  Someday you won’t even be close.
  17. Make an excuse to write.  Accuse your distractions openly of conspiring against you.
  18. Make fun of yourself for talking to inanimate objects.
  19. In life, utility is a higher place than longevity.
  20. Nothing wasted, nothing wanted.
  21. Take a big risk, fall on your face, then take a big risk again.  You already know how the ground feels.
  22. Freestyle awkwardly.
  23. Burn that sh*t down and start over.
  24. F’ these rules maann!
  25. We need more cowbell.
  26. Silliness trumps seriousness.
  27. Remember to write it down.  If you forget to write it down and later forget what you have forgotten, forget about your forgetfulness for you will have another brilliant idea tomorrow.
  28. Children are founts of endlessly flowing youth.  Barter a few more cupfuls of life from them by offering forth your carefree moments of child’s play.
  29. Call your mother.
  30. Now is as good a time as any to be the rockstar you wanted to be in high school.
  31. Sleep needs you.  You wouldn’t want it to get lonely because you weren’t there.
  32. Put everything you are into everything you do.  Leave blood, soul and bone fragment upon the dance floor.
  33. Business never personal is a misnomer.  If you could leave your person behind, you wouldn’t have much business to conduct.  Accept the gifts you bring with you and recognize that others should compensate you well for them.  Compensation is not simply monetary.  Make it your business to honor your personal every time.

Organic

by The AOMuse

she loved me
like a fresh vegetable
as i yielded
to her green thumb
she fertilized me
with a layer of compost
and contemplation
was art
how she could
twist the remains
into a warm
accumulation
of decomposition
egg shells
grass clippings
fireplace ashes
newspaper shreds
browns
carbon rich
greens
nitrogen plenty
filled with earthworms
whom aerate my soil
consume pieces of me
together
in uniformity
i want to be as basic
as brown humus
in the heart
of your hands
as we beat
earthy renewal

"can i be your garden variety?"

Photosynthesis (Writer’s Unified Avatar Challenge)

by The AOMuse

okay fam here is the challange: take a member’s existing avatar and write a piece on it.  not about the poet per say, but about their avatar, if the two are not one and the same. – alvetta

couch
these roots
in the color
of chlorophyll
against an aura
golden flecked
rich with sun
renew me each day
we arrive
self sustained
supplanted
this stem stands
with backbone firm
i am not
your
fragile flower
i am
learning
to transform
each issued
breath
from mere
greenhouse gas
to the oxygen
of a new day
i inhale
the rich aroma
of creation
to exhale
a living wind
grasp a handful
of dark earth
when you forget
what is real
water my garden
for the fruit
i produce
shall be
sufficient
to feed
hungry nations
as you eat
offerings
from my
giving tree
resist the urge
to pluck
me barren
honor our
symbiotic cycle
as we feast
upon each other
find fullness
in tempering
your appetite

Nomadic Poet’s Oasis Other Wives Roster Vol. 1

by The AOMuse

so without giving up someone obvious as the first wife (‘specially since my only known wife went and kissed some other woman ‘fore me : all i know is that the both of youse best to fix me a dynamite dinner when ya’ll done making out [image] ) : i’m going to introduce for those that don’t know : this lil’ dumpling who goes by the name "get_christie_love" : damn : i fawn over her words : like bambi to mama doe : that’s not her real picture above : [image] ((at least i don’t think)) : and my eyes first locked with her words : while i was engaged in reading "my midnight meditation" over at the soultry forum : what do i know of her? : she’s a detroit-ite : or is it detroit-ian? : hell : she live in motor city : and she has this wicked unkempt humor : appearing in random intervals : not unlike the feigned foolish wisdom of my ‘nother other wife : and that’s about it : she don’t pop up her head many places any more : not even her own damn forum [image] : barring the occasional quirky remark : or poetic spill : at the projx : so i ain’t had a proper exchange with her : but as with all my wives : someday : we’z gon’ make sweet, passionate poetic bliss together : as we walk down the aisle of words : here’s a sampling of what she did on : midnight meditation : and how i had to come back : to snuff out the bedroom lights

my midnight medtation

you don’t know this
but
i like to sleep facing
your back-
i like to slip in
closer and closer
until my forehead is
resting between your shoulder blades and
when you sigh,
it caresses where my bangs
used to grow.
you don’t know this
but
i like to sleep
with my arm on your thigh,
resting in the crook of your hip where it starts to get
a little rough to the touch.
most men have it.
that rough patch right where the hips are
and
i like to feel it
you don’t know this
but
i like to sleep on my side
facing your back,
and i raise my inside arm to
play with your face
trying to wake you then
i act like
i’m still asleep. and when
you drift off
i do it again this
it’s my favorite part of all because
if i succeed
in arousing a sneeze then
i’ve got your full attention
and i wait
til you flip over,
and i flip over,
and
you
sleep
facing my back
with your arm on my waste cutting off the circulation but
i don’t move it
because
i love you and
i deserve it.

and you deserve
every moment
of your obliviousness
because i love you
for you don’t know
that i sneak you
an extra glass
of chardonnay
before bedtime
because i love the way
your ass wiggles
when you rush to release
in the dimly lit walk
to bathroom door
you don’t know
that i recognize
every dimple
in every cheek
even in darkness
you don’t see me peek
beyond the barrier
of your dressing screen
you don’t hear
my hushed scream
or notice that
i bite my nails
at the sight
of your silhouette
tiny flickers
of light
that illumine
my thoughts
a quarter past midnight
as you tickle
and i ignore
to implore
you
to continue
the game
but you don’t notice
that this
midnight samsara
is my focus
as i shift from
my right side
to a position
that eventually sends
my left arm
into numbness
by morning
you don’t know
that i would rather
be discomforted
in your comfort
than experience
a moment without
you knowing me.

Notes From An Exorcism: An Ishi Meditation

by The AOMuse

voudoun priestess
whispering magic
gris gris sachets
behind husky alto
possessing my limbs
twisting tendons
and ligaments
into a frenzy
stretching
cardiac
muscle
that it might accept
each slow injection
of her holy water
birth me
a sun moon child
hum me ishi
in meditative tones
lead me alone
in wilderness
with knowledge
that i may always
return
om

wash my face
in indigo soul
make me
Krishna blue black
Ausar resurrected
Buddha enlightened
siphon off the pain
from the gas tank
of my soul
give me the fuel
i require
to rise up and go
break apart
my heart beat
with an ill placed snare
unnerve my being
with an unwavering stare
pierce my transparency
and call it insufficient
for one who deems himself
a devotee
until my gyrations
crush flesh bone
and my motion
originates
from a place
soul deep
kiss me with
a screeching yell
bathe me
in the baptism
of your Banshee
call upon someone
to cry
today i died
like a Bennu bird
consumed by flames
surrounding
the opera house
as i danced
into ecstasy
