recently, one of my sister poets in the Writer’s Unified group had opportunity to share a reflection on childhood abuse which she described as a cleansing series of thoughts. in my response to that piece, i offered her this quote from Anais Nin which i extend now to you as i think it a might appropriate.
If you do not breathe through writing, if you do not cry out in writing, or sing in writing, then don’t write, because our culture has no use for it. – Anais Nin
in a word this quote is an oxymoron, Anais simultaneously asks us not to write in the same breath which she states that everyone who can and will breathe, cry, and sing through their words should and must write. breathing, crying, and singing are not well known to be the gentlest of arts so let your conscience be your guide. breathe your words with a loud snort…or gentle sniff. cry out with wet, messy sobs…or restrained, silent moans. sing your life in the voice of an airy soprano…or a ballsy contralto. do all these things or you will not do your own soul proper justice.
