An Informal Study in Pedestrian Crossings

by The AOMuse

I am a man
shoeless roaming
foot pads
like leather soles
well worn
all weather
off road traveler
changing direction
wandering
a rugged trail
forked in opposition
to what once
I envisioned
a destination
certain

which path
to choose?

I am a trail blazer
through thistle
and buckthorn
garlic mustard
and reed grass
over red clay
Al’bama backwoods
New O’leans bayou
Miss’sippi mud
‘long the river bank
stuck deep once
upon a childhood
sojourn gone long
far ‘way from home
sinking
quicksand low

how do I unfix
dis’ hea’ jam?

I am a journeyman
apprenticed to
St. Christopher
Khonsu
and Mercury
earning my keep
by beating those feet
let no moss grow
before I go
between boxcar
buttressing myself
by singing the blues

“now my companion trav’lin /
away from me / loved a woman /
she was some good company /
but now i’m leavin / walkin off /
without my shoes / i say i’m walkin /
hope these toes don’t get too bruised”

I am a pedestrian
standing
in a crosswalk
contemplating
signal
destination
and direction
perhaps
i will know
before the light
changes again
and I am forced
to go one way
or the other.

Pedestrian

NaPoWriMo 9:30 ~ ….but the writing must happen still….

by The AOMuse

when a
meandering mind
finds your vessel
drifting through
foreign waters
towards aimless
harbor
buttressed
by the anxiety
that sudden storm
might sweep
this gentle boat
beneath the undertow.

clutter clutches
at your ankles
angling to suffocate
sensory input
there is the absence
of feeling here
coupled with
the awareness
that soon comes
that fated flow
of return
an emotional tide
hugging
the shoreline
like a phantom limb
refastened in place
nerve endings glow
alive again all at once
transmitting muddled
information.

a vulnerable state of being
remembering old wounds
coated in new abscess
cathartic nostalgia halting
just shy of healing
an unusual place
where recollection of pain
inflicted
is only partially preferred
to an unknown anguish
on the horizon.

Courage….for the writing continues still.

NaPoWriMo 16:30 ~ Hiatus (Journey Into The Free Verse)

by The AOMuse

The Muse
spits it out
like sneezy
snotty faced
youngsters
with hard
dialogue
for all
the writers
here
amongst us
off on a hiatus
still writing
when she wants us
we are so
inspired
won’t deny her
when she punctures
our person
with the pencil
edge
we’ve taken
a simple
pledge
to dangle
on the ledge
and overflow
when we
are overfed
full with
all the discipline
that certain
words
have given them
pain is physical
when verses
simply won’t
come into them
so when it
visits them
channel change
is near impossible
considered exorcism
cleansing breath
which we are
locked into
reaching
to draw
sense of sound
we sometimes
sounds illogical
our heart is
artistry
painting portrait
of the improbable.
